naja, also was sie da über den "inhalt" von "the last fighter" erzählen klingt ja schon ziemlich grauenhaft. hört sich sehr nach einem direct-to-video film an. breakdance und martial arts, und der etwas behäbig wirkende Ron Smor... beeindruckt die breakdance-gangsta-kids mit seinem martial arts -- muss das alles sein? ein neuer van damme versucht sein glück...

oh gott. Die Story von Ron's holländischem Debut ist ja vielleicht banane. Teilweise autobiografisch inspiriert (mehr zum Who Am I?

Left For Dead"
UK's indie martial arts thriller

by Chris Jones

03.10.2003 - Modern Life? And Big Cat Productions proudly present Left For Dead, a feature film shot and produced in Brighton on Digital Video (DV). Utilizing the best in British talent in front and behind the camera, Left For Dead is an independent, martial arts thriller pitched as Payback meets Fist Of Fury. The film is directed by up and coming UK native Ross Boyask who is well known locally and throughout the world for his innovative and stylish short films. The producer is his long-time collaborator Phil Hobden. Left For Dead has already been featured in Impact Magazine and local press, and is attracting interest from labels such as Hong Kong Legends and distributors from the US, Asia and Europe.

As a fellow cast member I had the opportunity to sit down recently during a break from filming the big finale with other cast and crew to ask a few questions for Kung Fu Cinema. First up is director Ross Boyask.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris Jones: Tell me a little bit about Left For Dead.

Ross Boyask: Left For Dead is our first full length martial arts action feature that will spearhead our upcoming slate of genre based pictures. Left For Dead is a full-blooded martial arts revenge thriller. It deals with themes of betrayal and revenge with lots of action and blood on the way.

Chris Jones: Without giving too much away, what is the story?

Ross Boyask: Kincaid runs the city. He destroys the lives of our two heroes. Williams is a hitman for Kincaid and one of his captains who wants to quit in order to lead a normal life. The other is a promising young kickboxer who wants to win or lose his fights the honest way. The two characters realize they have a common goal and team up to take down Kincaid and his organization and settle their grudges against his other captains - Dillon, Taylor, and Gibson.

Chris Jones: Sounds great! Modern Life? and Big Cat have put together an impressive cast. Tell me, who is in it?

Ross Boyask: Left For Dead stars Combat regular Glenn Salvage who was featured in Project: Assassin and A Distant Shadow. He plays the reluctant hitman. Newcomer Andy Prior plays Kelso, the promising kickboxer. Gordon Milne plays the crime boss, Kincaid. Gordon has co-starred in Extreme Challenge, Jackie Chan's Accidental Spy, and has been involved with many other features and shows. He also played the lead villain in Pure Vengeance. I really wanted someone who could act and fight for this part to make sure the final showdown would be a dazzling one-on-one fight.

We also have many other experienced performers working on the project including Brendan Carr and Gary Paylor (Masters Of Combat), Shane Steyn (Queens Messenger, Cold Harvest), Ashley Beck, Andy Scriven, and of course veteran actors such as Nelson E. Ward (Mainline Run and A Distant Shadow) and Bill Thomas (BBC's Cutting It).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Left For Dead also features the talents of the UK Martial Arts TV and Film team and First Strike Action Team who, as Ross mentioned, have credits on feature films such as Jackie Chan’s Accidental Spy and Queen’s Messenger. They have also performed for The Royal variety Performance and worked on various promos and motion capture for Play Station games.

First Strike Action Team is the heart of the fight and stunt sequences in Left for Dead and several members were asked to comment on the group's origins.

According to Brendan Carr, "We were originally called Stuntmania, but we had to change the name for legal reasons. We came together probably back when myself and Gary were competing professionally..."

Continuing, Gordon Milne observed, "that despite people like Stunts incorporated and all the Hong Kong Teams like Jackie Chan’s and Jet Li’s there was no one that specifically specialized in fight scenes… no one does…"

" The stunt register for example – you have limited skills and people that just do fight scenes," concluded Carr. "That’s why we specialize only in fighting – spin outs, scare falls all that kind of stuff. What we’ve done is taken the best from all over the country, TV guys, Demonstration guys and we brought them together into one team. It was funny because when we were going off to auditions we’d keep seeing the same faces, the same people making it through… and that’s who First Strike are."

With the cream of UK action talent involved and a production team with over ten years experience working together, Left For Dead is set to push the envelope on Digital Video production. With a small budget by Hollywood standards, Left For Dead will feature heart pumping martial arts action unlike any film before it. It will be a landmark production setting the standard for all that follow.

According to producer Phil Hobden, "When people look at Left For Dead they won’t believe what we’ve done for the money we have. We’ve been years ahead of Hollywood, who only believed that martial arts films could be serious money after The Matrix. After all, that film was only original for those who hadn’t been following martial arts movies from Hong Kong. [When you] look at Left For Dead, imagine that we had $1 or $5 million dollars for our follow up feature… it’s fair to say that we can, and will knock the socks off anything that the US can produce.“

Watch out for upcoming issues of UK's Combat Magazine and Impact for more coverage of Left For Dead.

Left For Dead will be released in June 2003. For more infor
